Poet/Romantic/Author
What can I say about Edgar Allan Poe that hasn’t already been written, we all know The Raven and Annabelle Lee, both pertaining to the loss and tragic death of his wife Virginia, are about regret and lost love in our lives.
Edgar Allan Poe was an American writer, a poet, author, editor, and literary critic…
He mainly wrote about death, regret and lost love…he had a profound impact on literature and considered the originator of both detective fiction and the modern short story and contributed to several genres romanticism and Gothic horror…
Edgar Allan Poe was born January 19, 1809 to then actors in Boston Massachusetts, he was abandoned by his father and his mother died a year later from tuberculosis , he was taken in by a wealthy merchant John Allen and his wife from Richmond, Virginia, they served as foster parents, although he was never formally adopted they gave him the name Edgar Allan Poe. When Poe’s foster mother passed away, it upset him very much because she was his encouragement and his support in his life, He was 15 years old and at the time his foster father John Allen was having numerous affairs. Edgar would sit at her grave crying he challenged John Allan, saying women should be treated with respect, because of this they never got along and John sent him away to the university of Virginia which had only been around for two years and was a very Unrepeatable university, he only gave him enough money to get to the school, the school had been chaotic. They had a bad reputation, police were always being called upon for rebel rousing and the killing of a professor. Edgar would draw all over the walls of his room and read stories to his classmates at the time no one was sure if he was going to be an artist or writer, in order to supplement his income, Edgar tried his hand at gambling because of lack of funds. He finally dropped out of college afraid of debt collector’s and joined the military. In the military, he had a bright career in the army. He became a sergeant major of artillery and then moved to West Point for a while, because of harsh conditions and rules, he quit his classes and was discharged.
At this time Edgar went to live with his aunt in Baltimore and this is where he fell in love with his first cousin Virginia .. at the time she was only 12 yrs old 🤷♀️ please I’m only reporting the facts void of opinions and judgments 😂.. they where very much in love and life was blissful until she became sick with tuberculosis and life became difficult because as a writer he could not take care of his family on the income he was paid . It was very difficult at this time writers where not paid enough he was only paid 14 dollars for The Raven… Virginia battled tuberculosis for five years she finally passed away after 11 years of marriage at the age of 21…
During Virginia’s passing The Raven was written about bereavement and loss. Edgar never recovered from her loss. He immortalized his childhood bride by writing the poem Annabel Lee his love for Annabel Lee began many years ago in the kingdom by the sea though very young their love for each other burned with such intensity that even the angels were envious and caused Annabel Lee’s death but their love was strong enough and extends beyond the grave and every night he lies down by her side in the tomb by the sea …
Poe passed away under unusual circumstances he was found lying in the street disheveled and semi conscious, he was taken to a hospital and put in the alcoholics ward . They think he was suffering from drug induced alcohol, at the time, voting was going on in Baltimore and it was a known fact that drugged alcohol had voters at the time so drugged that they would go and vote more than one time it was called cooping a form of electoral fraud where they would get said candidate elected sometimes leading to violence and murder..
Edgar Allan Poe passed away at the young age of 40 on October 7, 1849 at this time he had lost his mother, foster mother, brother and wife to tuberculosis his life was filled with tragedy, struggle and sadness he always believed that there was life beyond the grave…
The Raven the meaning behind it …is the grief of losing a loved one and the struggle to overcome it … famous quote from The Raven ..never more…

Out of all the writers, I had always had a hard time reading his work. I had to read The Raven for my English class in highschool. For some reason, it haunted me for a long time.
Excellent job, Halina, of telling the story of an artist with a troubled past. So many of the great artist suffered lives that were full of challenges and emotional pain. Poe is one of my favorite writers. His work fascinates me in its depth of emotion. Thank you for sharing these interesting back stories of artists that we have known for years through their work. Well done.
