St Michael’s Mount
Historical site
St Michael’s Mount is a tidal island off the coast of Cornwall England, passable between mid and low tide. There’s an actual walkway to the mount from the mainland of Britain.
The oldest building on the summit includes a castle which dates back to the 12th century. The monastic buildings were built as well during the twelve century, also used as a pilgrim site. Chapel Rock on the beach marks the site dedicated to the Virgin Mary where pilgrims paused to worship before descending the mount.
Another point of interest on the island is the Underground Railway not for public access but was built by minors around 1900 replacing pack horses
Legend has it before the castle was built, the island of St Michael’s Mount was home to an 18-foot giant called Cormoran, who lived in a cave with all his ill begotten gains he stole from villagers, also loved to eat cattle and children until Jack took on the giant by trapping him in a concealed pit and brought down his axe upon the giants head. So hence was born Jack the giant killer or Jack and the beanstalk.
St Michael’s Mount has also been the setting for many movies, tv shows and novels. Most recently House of the Dragon, and if looking for a murder mystery—Nicola Upson The secrets of Winter.
